Benefits of Being a Vegetarian

People who are vegetarian do not eat any type of meat. This is mainly for religious or dietary reasons. I have been vegetarian my whole entire life, since I was born in a Hindu family with all my ancestors being vegetarian. When I was in Elementary and Middle School, my friends used to always make fun of me for being vegetarian since they thought that being vegetarian would make me weak and unhealthy in the long run. Well what my friends think is absurd! More and more people are becoming vegetarian each day! In fact, recent research shows that there are numerous of benefits for being vegetarian and research also shows that it is extremely unhealthy to eat meat.

Almost six to eight million people of the United States of America’s population is vegetarian. A few million people of America’s population do not eat red meat, but eat chicken and fish. About two million people of USA’s population is vegan.

There are a few types of vegetarians. Vegans do not eat any type of meat, poultry, and seafood. Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians eat eggs and dairy products but not any type of meat, poultry, and seafood. Lacto Vegetarians eat dairy products but do not eat meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs. Ovo vegetarians do not eat meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products but eat egg products. Partial Vegetarians do not eat most meat excluding fish and/or poultry.

There are numerous of benefits of being vegetarian. People who are vegetarian are 25% less likely to have cardiac events such as a heart attack. Being a vegetarian can reduce the risk of cancer. If you stop eating red meat, then the chances of getting cancer is very slim. Becoming vegetarian can also reduce a person’s chance of having type two diabetes. If a person is vegetarian, then it will keep their weight down. The life expectancy is longer for a vegetarian compared to a non- vegetarian. Being vegetarian can also build stronger bones. It also prevents food- borne- illnesses. A person who is vegetarian will tend to have more energy than a meat eater.

All of the vitamin supplements can come from vegetarian items. Broccoli can supply a sufficient amount of calcium. Vegetarians can get high potassium and magnesium by eating fruits and vegetables. Leafy vegetables can supply Vegetarians Vitamin K. Eating breakfast cereal can help a vegetarian get Vitamin D and Vitamin B12. Protein can come from beans, lentils, nuts, whole grains, etc. Vegetarians can get sufficient Zinc by eating seeds, beans, and legumes. Eating walnuts can help a vegetarian get a sufficient amount of Omega 3.

Eating meat is very bad for you. Eating meat increases the chance for cancer. It also increases the risk for heart disease and diabetes. Eating meat makes it hard to maintain a normal BMI. It also carries the most Food- Borne- Illnesses. Being non- vegetarian increases the chance of dying.

I now realize that my friends have no knowledge of how it is better in every aspect of being vegetarian instead of non- vegetarian. There are numerous of health benefits for being vegetarian. It is possible to get all the vitamin supplement by not eating meat. Also by eating meat it increases the chance for death! This all shows how it is better to be a vegetarian rather than an non-vegetarian.
